Ted Horrell, the principal at Germantown High School in Tennessee, gave out the results of the school's state report card, which breaks down standardized test scores by race and income.
The aim of the assembly was to talk about how the school could close the achievement gap and introduce a new programme to help struggling students. the Huffington Post reports.

One student, however, jumped to Mr Horrell's defence. The unnamed student wrote in an email to WREG that 'information is valuable,' and that the principal just wanted to share the facts.
The student wrote: 'As a student there, I do want to know how we are performing when it comes to standardized tests.

'I think that once people were made aware of the data, they made judgments and did not fully listen to Dr. Horrell. The changes Dr. Horrell is making to GHS is to better the students.'

French fans of Michael Jackson are suing the late pop star’s doctor for “emotional damage” they suffered over his death, their lawyer said Friday. The case against Conrad Murray, who was jailed in November over the star’s 2009 death, is due to be heard in the city of Orleans on April 11, lawyer Emmanuel Ludot said.
“It’s similar to losing a childhood friend in a traffic accident. Because this death affects you, you have the possibility to file a suit and seek compensation,” Ludot said.

The lawyer is acting for around 100 fans who are members of an association that calls itself the “Michael Jackson Community”.
He said that while each fan could be awarded damages of up to 10,000 euros (13,000 dollars), they were seeking only a symbolic euro.

Jackson, aged 50 at the time of his death, had hired Murray at a salary of $150,000 a month to look after him as he rehearsed and embarked on a series of “This is It” planned comeback shows in London.
The star died on June 25, 2009 at his Los Angeles home of an overdose of anaesthetic propofol, taken to help him battle insomnia.

Murray was found guilty in November of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to the maximum four years in prison.

In the US state of Oklahoma, a prisoner convicted of murder yet pleading not guilty has become the first American inmate to be executed in 2012.

Gary Roland Welch faced death by lethal injection on Thursday evening at the state penitentiary. He had been sentenced to capital punishment for fatal stabbing of Robert Dean Hardcastle in 1994.

At his last hearing, the 49-year-old maintained that he had only killed Hardcastle in self-defense and that he would not apologize for the killing because Hardcastle had initiated the fight.

"To me, this was life or death. It was just luck that I survived," said Welch. "My intentions were never to kill him. But I also didn't intend for him to kill me either."

However, Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board narrowly denied clemency.

Welch has become the 1,278 person to be executed since capital punishment was reinstated in the United States in 1976.

Since 1976, every year the US has published a detailed report on the state of human rights in the world, often with scathing analyses of alleged abuses committed in China and Russia.

On December 28, 2011, Russia released its first report on the US human rights record, in which it argued that "Judicial errors are the Achilles' heel of American justice as concerns capital punishment."

According to the report, the United States has sentenced about 130 people to death in the past 30 years, who were later cleared of the charges, some after they were executed.

Paul Wolf, a human rights and international lawyer in Washington, has said, “There's almost no end to the list of human rights abuses that the United States is committing.”

A Fayette County jury cleared 67-year-old Alberta Kelley of drug possession and manufacture charges on Wednesday after she told them she simply tossed a handful of seeds into her garden after a bearded stranger gave them to her.

Connellsville police charged Kelley a year ago after receiving a tip about Kelley's garden. Investigators say they found seven well-cultivated, four-foot marijuana plants behind her home.
But Kelley claimed she didn't know what she was growing. She said she'd been given the seeds by a stranger in a pointy hat who told her they were flower seeds.
